Designed as a criminal offense heroic tale and symbolically titled “Udta Punjab”, the film delves into the growing drug menace within the state of geographical region.
The narrative intertwines the lives of a well-liked youth icon, rock-star-cum-rap-singer Tommy Singh, migrant working man Kumari little finger, awho unknowingly gets caught within the clutches of the drug mafia, doctor-cum-activist Preet Sahni, Inspector Sartaj Singh and his younger brother island.
The plot is pretentious, dramatised and far-fetched. The narration begins with medicine being flung across the border, within the dark of the night, into a field in geographical region. The packet accidentally lands in Kumari Pinky’s hand, World Health Organization tries to fob off the consignment to Bali’s contact.
Though unequipped with the ways that of drug dealing, she negotiates within the hope of creating a fast buck.
Inexplicably, realisation dawns on little finger, once she is on the way to satisfy the pusher. She destroys the consignment before obtaining caught by the mafia and has got to face the forcefulness of its wrath for her deed.
Meanwhile, the police in their zest to indicate ‘cop power’ arrest Tommy Singh for mistreatment medicine and corrupting the youth along with his drug-infused black music.
Also, Sartaj Singh realises that his brother has become a disciple, once he lands at Preet Sahni’s clinic when obtaining over-dosed. The doctor motivates Sartaj to fight the drug menace, “system mein rehekar”.
The characters area unit well-defined, however their graphs area unit poorly incised, particularly Tommy Singh. His journey tho' exposed realistically, is unconvincing.
The drama that keeps you hooked solely highlights the premise of the story. It sends out a powerful message that each individual must fight the corrupt system at their individual level. however the dramatic moment hits the height once Tommy, whereas explaining to little finger, screeches, “Maal khatam, party over, go home.” What follows is associate equally spectacular reply from little finger.
The dialogues, replete with cuss words, area unit as spirited because the performances. Shahid Kapoor, along with his tattooed physique and funky hair, portrays Tommy Singh to the T. He lives the character of associate performing artist perpetually below the influence of medication and he demonstrates it along with his meteoric moods, that he displays with menacing, bone-chilling exactness.
Similarly, with a deglamourised and wild look, Alia Bhatt captures your heart as little finger. She is consistent and sensible in her performance.
With a restrained performance, Punjabi cinema’s matinee idol Diljit Dosanjh is spectacular and makes a bearing. he's intense as a involved brother and charming as Preet’s love interest.
Prabhjyot Singh essays the role of island, a victim of circumstances to a T. You unknowingly feel compassionate him, even once he turns into a criminal.
Kareena Kapoor Khan, as Preet is competent, however offers nothing exceptional. thus is Satish Kaushik, World Health Organization plays Taayaji, Tommy’s uncle and show promoter.
The songs area unit situational. They add flavour to the film, however don't propel the narrative.
Mounted with moderate production values, the film is deliberated as a neo-realistic film. Rajeev Ravi’s photography is outstanding with realistic frames. The sound, designed by Kunal Sharma, effectively stratified by editor Meghna subunit, enhances the viewing expertise.
Overall, “Udta Punjab”, with all the plug it created within the media for its “expression of inventive freedom” is value a watch, just for the performances and social message
